YOU'RE OUT! YOU DIDN'T STAY IN THE BASELINE!
"The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high; He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness. Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, and the strength of salvation; the fear of the Lord is His treasure." Isaiah 33:5-6
During one of my first real baseball games, I played second base on the Rancho Village Cobras. The game was tied, and it was our last time at bat. There were two outs, we had a runner on third, and I was at the plate. The pitcher threw the ball, and I hit it into right field. I ran to first and stopped. I thought we had won the game until the umpire said, "The batter is out! He failed to stay within the baseline." I remember our coach arguing, but he didn't change the umpire's mind. He knew the rules, and apparently I hadn't followed the rules.
God has defined a baseline for every one of us, His children, in the Bible. In it's pages God gives us knowledge and wisdom for all our lives, truth so we can stand strong in our salvation, and opportunity both to know and fear the Lord. What a treasure to have access to the holy scripture!
But what if we fail to live by God's rules? What if we run outside of His baselines? What if we ignore His Word? We lose something far greater than a baseball game. We lose the treasure of sweet fellowship with God.
Prayer :
Lord God, You treasure the fear of Your people. You treasure our reverence, respect, gratitude, and love treasures forged in my heart thanks to the gift of Your Word and the work of Your Spirit! May my healthy fear of You keep me joyfully in the baselines of life!
Amen
