Running the Race

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. -Hebrews 12:1-2

As a student, do you remember participating in races during physical education class or recess time? There were 100m, 200m, 400m races, and more. As thrilling as it was to perform while your classmates cheered, do you recall how you felt afterward? If you hadn't prepared for the race, your body paid the price! You would have been sore for days. The reason your body might have ached because of inadequate training beforehand.
The writer of Hebrews compared the Christian life to running a race, but this isn't just any race it's a lengthy race, like a marathon. Completing this race requires endurance, training, and discipline. In this race, believers often face difficulty. But the author challenged believers to lay aside every weight.
In other words, they are to get rid of anything that hinders their relationship with Christ. Prayer : Dear God, help me run the race with endurance, fixing my eyes on Jesus. Help me resist the temptations of the world so that I may run a strong race. Amen.
