True Leaders Serve
Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. -Mark 10:43-45
Leadership has been the focus of much attention in recent years. There are leadership coaches, leadership conferences, leadership networks, leadership books, leadership podcasts, and more. Everywhere we turn, the world seems desperate for quality leaders. But is it possible we are in greater need of something else? What is the real secret of leadership? Without question, Jesus Christ is the greatest Leader the world has ever known but, ironically, He is also the greatest Servant the world has ever known.
In today's passage, Jesus taught His disciples the true nature of effective leadership, and that is being a servant. Unlike the leaders who dominate their subordinates through power, money, or authority, Jesus called His followers first to cultivate the heart of a servant. Believers must first learn to serve others rather than to expect to be served. The grand purpose of Jesus ministry was serving others by suffering on the cross of Calvary to save us from sin (Isaiah 53).
Ask the Lord to show you how truly committed to being a servant you are. Who might directly benefit from your outstretched arms today? An elderly neighbor? A single mom? A struggling coworker? Ask God to open your eyes to the various needs around you. Greater impact may come through greater service. Everyone wins when you serve, including you.
Prayer : Dear God, help me to demonstrate Your love through humble service. May You touch the world through my service. Amen.
