Shelter
He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that files by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you. -Psalms 91:4-7
It was the middle of the night when one of those out-of-nowhere storms that we might in Kansas rolled in, bringing hail the size of ping pong balls. Out among those fiercely bouncing pieces of ice, a mother duck sat on her nest and she didn't move. She had eggs in that nest, so whatever happened to her would just have to happen. She refused to leave her eggs at the mercy of the storm.
The atheist would have to engage in some serious mental gymnastics to imagine how such a self-sacrificial, altruistic instinct could happen accidentally. That's because the instinct didn't happen accidentally. That hen remained in the storm, faithfully sitting on her eggs, because much of Creator's handiwork reflects something of His character.
Our Scripture passage today says that you can rest "under His wings." You need not to be afraid of the undefined nighttime terror you can't see. You don't have to fear the flying arrows you can see in the daytime, those hurdles and hardships, those sources of pain and moments of loss. Jesus is doing the watching for you. He has completely.
Prayer : Dear Lord, help me to remember You are here with me. Sometimes my fears scream at me so loudly that I forget about Your all-powerful presence. Help me to face this day with calm assurance. In Jesus name, Amen.
