Delight and Desire
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. -Psalms 37:3-4
History has often been shaped by the power of simple statements. Whether uttered in a political moment, sung as a catchy slogan, or penned in an historic document, a simple statement can indeed be powerful. However, all of history's great statements pale in comparison to the potency of one biblical truth: 'Trust in the Lord." Found more than fifty times in the Bible this is a life-changing command.
The sequence in Psalms 37:3-4 is clear: God expects us to trust in Him first and foremost and to do good. As we trust and serve, we will find ourselves nourished by God's faithfulness, and as we dwell in the protection of His faithfulness, God will begin to shape our hearts desires. He conforms us into the image of His Son. In other words, as we faithfully delight ourselves in Him in His trustworthiness, goodness, faithfulness, and love He will begin to define, refine, and shape our desires.
God doesn't promise to give us whatever we want. He promises to give us what He wants when we want what He wants.
This process begins with our trust in God. Trust is the first stepping stone along the path that leads to our delighting in Him. And our delighting in God frees Him to do His transformative work on the desires of our hearts. May we trust in the Lord!
Prayer : Heavenly Father, I trust in You and ask that You will shape and transform the desires of my heart so I may want Your will for me and do it. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
