OUR INHERITANCE
We do not cease to pray for you that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened will all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.
Colossians 1:9-12
Paul was again praying for Christ followers, for "the saints in the light," and thanking God for the inheritance He has for His people throughout eternity. What do we know about that inheritance?
When we are redeemed from our sinful ways of living apart from God, we receive an inheritance that certainly includes heaven. In addition, we inherit the presence of God in our inner man. In other words, our spirit is made alive in Christ as His might and power work in us. Jesus grants us inner strength "for all patience and longsuffering with joy." The Father has qualified us to be partakers of inheritance, and clearly that is a reason to like Paul give thanks. One more thought about inheritances: they're not what they used to be!
One more thought about inheritances: they're not what they used to be! People are living longer, and assisted care facilities drain retirement funds and inheritances. After we retire, we may not have much to leave to our kids and even if we did, it wouldn't last.
Two thousand years ago, however, Jesus secured our inheritance. Then when we named Him our Lord, He placed His Holy Spirit within us. And the Spirit strengthens us, fills us with knowledge, and blesses us with wisdom and understanding. And that rich inheritance will never fade.
Prayer :
Lord, thank You for my eternal inheritance. Fill me today with Your Spirit that I may know strength and wisdom for this leg of the journey of life.
Amen
