JESUS, LAMB OF GOD
If the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Hebrews 9:13-15
Imagine coming to worship on Sunday and seeing several bulls and goats at the altar. Well, that was ordinary worship for an Old Testament saint. The temple priest would sacrifice the animals and sprinkle the blood seven times upon the temple altar. This ritual sacrifice was a sin offering for the Jews.
Then entered Jesus Christ, who "came as our High Priest " (Hebrews 9:11).
All the Old Testament scarifies were a foreshadowing of the once and for all sacrifice of Jesus, the sinless Lamb of God. Shed at Calvary, Jesus precious blood made atonement for all of mankind's sin with one key difference.
The Old Testament scarifies focused on external ceremonial cleansing, on "the purifying of the flesh," but these sacrifices could do nothing to cleanse the internal spirit or conscience. The old covenant rituals could not change a person's heart. The New Testament sacrifice of God's own Son, however, focused on the internal. With this new covenant sacrifice, the Lord would now "put His laws into their mind and write them in their hearts" (Hebrews 8:10).
By His sinless life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection, Jesus secured both our "eternal redemption" (9:12) and our "eternal inheritance."
Prayer :
Jesus, You are my Savior and my High Priest, the Mediator of the new covenant through Your sacrifice on the cross and I am grateful.
