LET'S GO TO WAR!
"What profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father and His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works." Matthew 16:26-27
Abraham Neumann once said, "The soul is the place where man's supreme and final battles are fought." We cannot afford to relinquish this battlefield of the soul, for that is where the flesh and the spirit go to war every single day of our lives.
Those of us who live in the lavishly affluent culture unique to America may find it quite enticing to "gain the whole world" at the expense of our souls. However, the stakes of that battle are very high. If we exchange the gospel of Jesus Christ for the temporary fame, fortune, and personal comfort that the world offers, the effect on our eternal destinies will be catastrophic.
Years ago we often heard it said, "He who dies with the most toys wins." However, the temporary joy that worldly possessions bring will evaporate before the God of the universe and His righteous judgment. Furthermore, it is hardly "winning" to sacrifice and eternity in heaven on the altar of short lived luxuries on earth.
Clearly, winning the battle of the soul looks a lot less like "he who dies with the most toys wins" and more like Jesus call to "deny yourself and take up your cross daily, and follow Me." (Luke 9:23).
Prayer :
Father, thank You for opening my eyes to the truth of Your gospel and reality of heaven. Thank You for rescuing me from the grip of this world. Help me keep that eternal perspective and be ready to celebrate Your return someday. In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
