THE PRINCIPLE OF DELIGHT
Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Psalm 37:4-6
To understand what it means to "delight ourselves in the Lord," we must first understand the principle of delight.
Many people quote Psalm 37:4, wanting to believe that God will do for them whatever they desire. But God is not all obligated to do whatever we want. He is obligated to do only what He has promised in His Word. So what does the verse mean?
First, in Scripture, the word delight means "to place yourself in the proper position of humility that you might hear God speak, that God might get access to your entire personhood, in order to mold you and conform you to the image of Jesus Christ." When such delight takes place, God places within your heart His desires for you. In other words, God's desires become our desires when we truly delight ourselves in Him.
Then verse 5 implies that we have the God given ability to commit our ways to Him and trust Him to bring to pass the plans He initiated. God will always bring to pass what He initiated. God will always bring to pass what He initiated as, by faith, believers cooperate with Him. What a wonderful and freeing principle: we are not responsible to perform for God, but in simple faith in responding to what God reveals we form for God, but in simple faith in responding to what God reveals we are simply to cooperate with God. When we do, God will bring to pass those desires that He has placed in our hearts and that we are embracing.
Prayer :
Lord, today I humble myself so that I might hear You speak, so that I can by faith join you in what desire to do in my life.
Amen
