YOU THINK THE LOCUSTS WERE A BIG DEAL?

"Now, therefore," says the Lord, "Turn to Me with all your heart, was fasting, with weeping, and with mourning." So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of the great kindness; and He relents doing harm."
Joel 2:12-13

God's covenant people had rebelled against Him, and their disobedience prompted His discipline. In Joel 1, the prophet recalled an invasion of locusts that destroyed their produce. These locusts served as an object lesson as Joel warned the people of the enemy invasion they would experience if they did not repent.
Joel encouraged the people of God to repent wholeheartedly. The Lord did not want merely a display: he didn't want people ripping their shirts and saying, "Woe is me!" God wanted their hearts truly to turn from sin and be realigned with His purposes. Joel spoke of God's patience and His willingness to turn from cursing them to blessing them. But the people did not repent. So God sent a pagan army to invade the land and carry His people into captivity.
The locust invasion served as a picture of this army's invasion, and this pagan army is a lesson to the unrepentant people in our day. The apostle Peter described the great and terrible day of the Lord when He will unleash the full fury of His wrath upon unbelievers. No plant could escape the locust, no person could escape the pagan, army, and, likewise, apart from Jesus, no one will escape the just wrath of God. God is patient, "not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance"
(2 Peter 3:9). But the unrepentant will perish.

Prayer :

Father, thank You for helping me see my sin and prompting me to repent. Give me courage, I pray, to warn unbelievers in my life of Your coming wrath.

Amen
