A BEAUTIFUL, SELF-GIVING LIFE
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2
A Muslim had been coming to our church for several years when he asked a perceptive question: "If God accepts me by grace, if His acceptance of me has nothing to do with how I live then why live any way that I want?" We don't have to be Muslim to ask this question. It's a question everyone asks.
Some people are motivated to live better because they want to be the best people they can be. Advertising today appeals to this kind of motivation with slogans such as "Achieve your personal best! Be beautiful, wealthy, strong, rich, famous!" Other people are motivated to live a good life in the hopes that God will forgive them for the sins they have committed. Even many religions of the world teach: live a good life, and God will be pleased with one's efforts.
The Bible, however, presents another way: Live life not simply for yourself. Live not just hoping for God's acceptance. Instead, live a beautiful, self-giving life because as the love of Jesus on the cross illustrates God has accepted you. Live you life in gratitude for Christ's extraordinary mercy. While you should never attempt to pay God back for His grace, you should live with an inner joy and in obedience to Christ because of His great mercy.
Prayer :
Father, thank you for your great mercy. How can I not give myself completely to You, who offered Your Son completely to me as a sacrifice for my sins? Amen.
