PRIESTLY DIVAS
The scribes and the Pharisees love greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, "Rabbi, Rabbi." But you, do not be called "Rabbi" for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:7-12
A saying in the South goes something like this: "I wish I could buy him for what he is worth and sell him for what he thinks he is worth."
The scribes and Pharisees of Jesus day thought they were worth a lot. Jesus said they had come to enjoy the attention of "greetings in the marketplace" and being called "Rabbi." Such special recognition contributed to their thinking more highly of them themselves than was warranted.
But rather than judge, let's realize how easily a position of authority can inflate our opinion of ourselves. That's one reason why Jesus called us to be humble. All that we have is from God, so why would we arrogantly act as if we accomplished anything on our own? What did anyone do to deserve being born of a sound mind and healthy body, in a country where freedoms are many and poverty is low? Regardless of how many people seek our advice or how many Twitter followers we may have, all we have, and all we are come from Christ. Jesus is our Teacher.
Prayer :
Lord, give me the humility and the vision to see around me the constant reminders that I am nothing without You.
Amen
