THE PERFECT TEACHER AND A DIFFICULT LESSON

Now behold, one came and said to Him, "Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." Matthew 19:16-17

Having played and coached high school football, I can assure you that few things in this world are more exciting than the experience of Friday night lights.
The small Christian school where I coached never seemed to have an adequate number of players to be successful. Many students wanted to be on the team and reap the benefits that come along with it, but few loved the game enough to make the heavy sacrifices necessary to wear the jersey.
Like most of the students at that school, the young man in this passage had a real desire for something, but a misunderstanding kept him from achieving it. Specifically, this young man wanted to live forever, but he misunderstood the meaning of eternal life. Christ laid the foundation for the lesson by letting him know that only God is without sin. Notice the words that our Teacher so masterfully chose: "if you want to enter into life." In order to enter something, you must first be outside of it. And this man was.
This young man had that life could offer him, and he wanted simply to extend his current experience for a similar eternity. But Jesus explained that true life is not of this world at all. In verse 21 we see that eternal life required more than rich young ruler was willing to give.

Prayer :

Lord, give me the desire and the strength to lay down my life, my very self daily to follow You.

Amen
