WE ARE THE BODY
You are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second apostles, third teachers, after that miracles, the gifts of healing, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.
1 Corinthians 12:27-31
My father currently has forty stents carefully placed inside his heart to maintain adequate blood flow. We can't live without an effective heart, and that fact holds true about other vital organs, like our lungs. Although some injuries may not be fatal, our effectiveness would certainly be diminished with, for instance, the amputation of a limb.
Likewise, the body of Christ functions in a fashion similar to the human body. (It should really be no surprise, given the fact that God created both bodies.) In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul made the point that even if we gain the position we much desire but do not love others, then we have accomplished nothing. God created each of us with particular gifts for the purpose of the effectiveness of the church, not so that we could heart.
How helpful to his body would it be if my father's doctor decided to replace hiss heart with a perfectly good lung? How effective would the church be if everyone tried to function as the pastor? Likewise, we must all embrace our own individual roles in the body of Christ.
Prayer :
Lord, I need You to help me respond to Your calling to me and not to Your calling to other people.
Then, Lord, help me to serve in love. Amen.
