VISIBLE WORSHIP

By Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Hebrews 13:15-16 Look again at the passage above and follow it's logic. Because of Jesus sacrifice for us sinners, we experience God's great love. In response to His sacrifice, we are to praise God and share with others. In light of what Jesus sacrifice means to us forgiveness, adoption in God's family, abundant life, eternal life how could we do anything but live a life of constant gratitude to Him? The primary way to show our gratitude is to praise Him, and praise is simply bragging about what we love or enjoy. We recommend restaurants after a great meal, and we wear our favorite NFL player's jersey on game day. Praise is a natural thing to do when we love someone or something. May it truly become second nature to praise Jesus once we have experienced His m

EXTRA PAYMENTS AND A WASTED CROSS

Every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:11-14 It was a little more than a year ago that we paid off my wife's car. It was the most expensive car we had brought, and it was the perfect family vehicle for us. After we spent four years making monthly payments, the car was completely paid for. After we made the last payment, the bank sent us the title to the car. If, when the next month rolled around, I authorized the bank to withdraw the amount of the monthly car payment from our account, you'd think I was foolish. People don't make extra car payments. Once a car is paid for, the hard-earned cash goes toward something else. Just as you would questi

CAN YOU OPEN THE DOOR?

It was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. Hebrews 9:23-24 Peter's impeccable grades enable him to graduate summa cum laude from one of our nation's best schools. Carissa's fledgling acting career takes off when she suddenly lands a starring role in a successful movie. Many doors open to both of these people. We spend much of our lives seeking open doors, looking for opportunities for our careers or social lives, and there are various keys for each. But what about the door of heaven? Will it open for us? What kind of key does it take? One day you will stand before a pure and holy God. Among other reactions, you may realize that throughout your life you have focused on your happiness, and you are

AN UNDETECTED NEED

Every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. but he who is called by God. Hebrews 5:1-4 Headlines report still one more effort to make peace in the cauldron of boiling animosity in the modern Middle East. Police officers tell of the call they especially hate: a need to respond domestic violence, where anything can happen. And then there is the heartbreaking suicide rate: on average, one person dies by suicide every forty seconds somewhere in the world. Alienation between countries, between spouses, and even within ourselves is evident throughout the world. Clearly, each person needs to be reconciled to God and made holy. What is holiness? It is being exclusively for God. If

HEAVEN WITHOUT GOD?

The scribe said to Jesus, "Well said, Teacher, You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He. And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. Mark 12:32-33 Anna, a woman no older than thirty, listens repeatedly to gospel message. After many weeks of listening to carefully crafted sermons and months of study, she comes to a conclusion. She approaches the church's pastor and explains that, after careful consideration, she has decided that it is to her benefit that she makes a decision about Jesus. Anna has realized that she doesn't want to experience pain throughout eternity, and she wants the peace that many others have experienced as result of their religious experience. Years go by, during which she marries and later divorces. All alone now and after a long absence, she reent

A BEAUTIFUL, SELF-GIVING LIFE

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2 A Muslim had been coming to our church for several years when he asked a perceptive question: "If God accepts me by grace, if His acceptance of me has nothing to do with how I live then why live any way that I want?" We don't have to be Muslim to ask this question. It's a question everyone asks. Some people are motivated to live better because they want to be the best people they can be. Advertising today appeals to this kind of motivation with slogans such as "Achieve your personal best! Be beautiful, wealthy, strong, rich, famous!" Other people are motivated to live a good life in the hopes that God will forgive t
