LOVE NOT THE WORLD

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world  passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever. 1 John 2:15-17 The central message of the Bible is love. However, we are not to love the world. The love for the world and the things in the world is a very dangerous desire. We are in the world but not of the world. The love of the world truncated the destiny of Demas who initially was ardent disciple disciple of Christ along with Luke. The love of the world led King Solomon astray until his twilight years, and he concluded that all was vanity. The love for the world also aborted the prophetic career of Gehazi, who lost a great opportunity of being a carrier of triple portion of level of power of his master, Elisha.

UNRIGHTEOUS ANGER

Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honor, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self will they digged down a wall. Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. Genesis 49:5-7 Anger is an emotion of instant displeasure on account of an offence. Every human has the capacity to be angry the same way we have the capacity to love. However, this emotion becomes sinful when causeless, excessive or protracted. Anger is a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure or hostility and can be very injurious to our relationships. In our text today, Simeon and Levi slew the Schemeites in anger (Genesis 32:1-31). This was an unrighteous display of anger. In anger Cain slew Abel. That was also an unrighteous display of anger (Genesis 4:5-8). Moses anger and disobedienc

YOU NEED WISDOM

This wisdom descendeth not from above, but it is earthly, sensual, devilish. For envying and strife is, there confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partially and without hypocrisy. James 3:15-17 Wisdom graced the lives of many biblical figures Daniel, Ezra, Joshua and brought them to great success. Similarly, kings and priests as well as princes and paupers all need wisdom. Solomon was notable for receiving and using the wisdom of God. This gave him a highly successful and reign. The judgement he gave on who the rightful mother of a living child was between two disputing prostitutes bore eloquent testimony to the working of the spirit of wisdom in his life. No matter what your calling, vocation, occupation or profession is, you need both power from on high and wisdom from above. Joshua got a great measure of the spirit of wisdom when Moses laid  his hands on h

ARE YOU REAL?

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, his disciples. Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. Th

YOUR WORD FRAMES YOUR WORLD

So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, it is well with thee? is it well with thy husband? it is well with the child? And she answered, it is well. Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went u, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said Take up thy son. Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out. 2 Kings 4:25-26, 35-37 Words are not ordinary. They either carry a negative charge or a positive charge. Words from the mouth of a child of God must be inspired by the Spirit of God and the word of God. Believers are not ordinary but peculiar pe

A FRESH START

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us ministry of reconciliation. To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:17-19 How to believe in Jesus Christ : 1. Accept the Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. 2. Acknowledge that you are a sinner.  3. Confess your sins. 4. Wholeheartedly repent of your sins. 5. Forsake all sins and start walking in obedience to the word of God. 6. Have faith in Christ and learn to grow in grace day by day. Thank God for your salvation and make sure you do not fall back to your sins. God has forgiven you and has written your name in the Book of Life. You are now a new man/woman, a born again, a child of God. This is your fresh new

YIELDED TO THE ALMIGHTY

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 Hear the buoyant confidence of Paul's words as he praised God for His omnipotence. I remember the question posed to Abraham: "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" (Genesis 18:14), and I can confidently say no. Nothing is too hard for God. We should look back over your life for evidence of that truth. Describe the most recent time the Lord came through for you. Review in your mind when He did what seemed impossible and took down a giant. The Lord provides for us in ways that are above and beyond our needs and what a great source of encouragement and strength. Another way to look at this passage is to think of God Himself as more than we can imagine, more wonderful than we could ever conceive! Notice, too, that God's power "works in

LOVING GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. 1 John 3:21-23 Since the heavenly Father through His Son has given us such love, we are able to love others. More than fifty-five times in the New Testament we find the term "one another." In this passage, for instance, we find the command "love one another." Such loving becomes a reality when we are found believing and obeying the Word of God. At times we find it difficult to love others, a difficulty that is often due to our own insecurities and doubts. However, when we allow the love of God to fill our hearts, love eradicates self-condemnation and "we have confidence toward God." He answers our prayers due to the fact

CHOSEN BY GOD AND FOR GOD

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love. Ephesians 1:3-4 The apostle Paul was full of praise as he reflected on his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and on "every spiritual blessing." Paul was grateful for the natural and spiritual blessings both works of the Lord that he was already enjoying. Paul put on display the rich life he knew as a result of the grace God bestows on believers. Indeed, it is a privilege to be a child of God. In these two verses Paul also celebrated the doctrine of election. He realized that he did not choose God, but rather God chose him. Almighty God took the initiative in the relationship. Furthermore, Paul understood that he was chosen not only by God but also for God. Pastor and writer Adrian Rogers would often say, &qu

ABIDING IN CHRIST

"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples." John 15:7-8 Today we will reflect on concepts that are fundamental to abiding in Christ. To abide means "to remain," and it can speak of perseverance. As we abide in God and His words abide in us, our desires really become His desires for us. We know what to ask for for because our abiding in His Word has readied our hearts to both ask for His guidance and hear His voice when He responds. Abiding is rooted in our devotion. We can't keep God's Word if we don't know His Word. God's Word must abide in us, and we must be devoted to hearing what He says to us through His Word. Dependence speaks of our relationship with Christ and our acknowledgement that we need Him and His guidance all our days. When we abide, we make decisions based on hearing from Him aft

FAITH THAT MOVES MOUNTAINS

"Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them." Mark 11:22-24 Every verse of God's Word contains truth us. At times, I hear a gentle rebuke from my heavenly Father. At other times, His Word compels me to look at my sins or encourages me to trust Him more. In Mark 11:22-24, Jesus challenged His disciples to consider the measure of their faith, and that is good exercise for you as well. You should ask yourself, "Do I really trust God? Is He truly able to do what He say?" To have faith in God to trust Him for something often calls us to step out of comfort zones and believe God. In Jewish literature, the term "rooted up of mountains" was used

SOVEREIGN POWER, SOVEREIGN GOODNESS, SOVEREIGN LOVE

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; a time to kill, and a time heal; a time break down, and a time to build up. Ecclesiastes 3:1-3 Today we hear from the wisest man who ever lived, and Solomon told us that not only are there times and seasons in this world, but there is also an overruling providence in our lives. From before our births to the moment of our deaths, God is accomplishing His divine purposes in our lives even though we may not always understand what He is doing. These truths defy theories of fatalism (the belief that all events are determined by fate and, therefore, inevitable) and deism (the belief that God exists and created the world but is not actively involved in it.) The Bible's truth is this: the almighty God created the whole world and controls it. He is compassionate toward us and sovereign in His lordship over creation, history, a

DIFFICULT WORDS

"It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.  The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." John 6:63 Jesus had just declared to the Jews and His disciples that they must eat His flesh and drink His blood for eternal life (John 6:54), and the disciples responded with "This is a hard saying; who can understand it?" (v.60). Thus Jesus was gracious and took the opportunity to teach a lesson about the gospel. In verse 54, Jesus was not saying that His followers would literally eat His flesh and drink His blood. But just as our physical body gain life-sustaining nutrients from the food that we eat,our souls gain eternal life from the words that Jesus speaks. The truth of His death, burial, and resurrection serves as the source of soul-sustaining assurance that we have eternal life. If we trust anything other than the broken body of Jesus and His shed blood to pay for our sins, we are probably motivated by works-based effort to be sav

DON'T LOSE FOCUS

"Now these are the seeds of God's Word sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirty fold, some sixty, and some a hundred." Mark 4:18-20 Today we consider the warning that emanates from this Mark 4 text. In addition to the reality of being separated from God for all eternity in a place called hell, a person's greatest fear should be coming to the end of this life and having nothing to show for it. First John 2:28 warns us readers that Christians should abide in Jesus so we can have confidence and not be ashamed at His appearing. If we are not careful, though, this life will pass us by, and our opportunity to make a difference will be gone. Many believers will go to heaven, but they will go empty handed be

PRAISING GOD FOR HIS WORD

Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. Mark 13:30-31 Among the many great gifts Jesus has given His children is His word. By His Word we know as Creator, Savior, and Sustainer of all that belongs to Him. Jesus is truly worthy of all the praise that we can ever give Him. We know we should praise Him and have many reasons to praise Him. So let's not just talk about what we should do, only to fail in carrying out our good intentions. Instead, in regard to praising and worshiping Jesus, let us move beyond our good intentions. Psalm 33, in particular, calls us to praise God because of His power in creation. So I invite you to pray with me as I offer this prayer of praise to our God and King: Father, I praise You because You are my Creator. You knew me before I was conceived in my mother's womb. You took pleasure in making me for Yourself. Thank

GOOD GROUND IS BROKEN GROUND

"He who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty." Matthew 13:23 From the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta to the peanut patches of southwest Georgia, I have been around farmers and farming for as long as I can remember. Jesus often alluded to farming to teach lessons of His kingdom. Today's verse comes from His parable of the soils. Of the four types of  ground that Jesus mentioned, only one was good for producing fruit, and that was broken ground. Just as the farmer uses a plow to break up the ground so it will be a good seedbed, the Lord often allows trails in our lives to break up the hardened ground of our hearts in order that His Word can be planted deep in our souls. A broken heart is one longing comfort. For a Christian, encouragement from Jesus can bring comfort like nothing else can. Jesus is the only One who can make a broken heart bet

RESTING IN HIS PRESENCE

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him will I trust." Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the Fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. Psalms 91:1-4 Throughout the psalms David referred to God and his Fortress, his Refuge, and his Strength. David faced many physical and spiritual battles throughout his life, and he experienced firsthand how God provides a strong fortress regardless of what attacks come at us. In the ancient world, a fortress was often walled off from the rest of the city. It's supplies of  food, water, and ammunition gave the people a place to be protected and a point from which the city could be defended. David knew that he did not need to fear because in God he found a Fortress stronger th

HIS SUFFERING FOR OUR DELIVERANCE

My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning? Our fathers cried to You, and were delivered; they trusted in You, and were not ashamed. Psalms 22:1,5 Have you ever felt so completely alone, forsaken, and isolated that you wondered if anyone would ever be there for you again? These famous words of David in Psalm 22 express a level of anguish and pain that I can honestly say I've never felt before, but maybe you have. Jesus Himself uttered these same words later as He hung on the cross to pay the penalty for all of our sins. The words seem to express a feeling of total abandonment, but when we look more closely, we see that David knows that God had provided for earlier believers, and David trusted that God would provide for him too. We also see in this psalm one reason why we can go to Christ for help: we can be confident that He truly understands our suffering and grief because He Himself experienced them. Truth

HOPE AMIDST DESPAIR

Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassion fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I hope in Him!" Lamentations 3:22-24 Whenever we are knocked down, we may be tempted to lose hope. The prophet Jeremiah basically held a funeral for the city of Jerusalem. In the book of Lamentations, his words reflected the heart of God's people who wept over the Babylonian capture of their great city. The verses above show the key moment when Jeremiah went from the lowest point of despair to the heights of hope in God. In today's passage, Jeremiah told us that God's compassion never fails. In fact, His compassionate acts of love are fresh and new everyday. In light of that truth, Jeremiah declared God's great faithfulness: God is reliable and trustworthy. Although we often see circumstances as harsh and even hopeless, that's not the whole truth. Only

THE JOY WE RECEIVE

Let all those who put their trust in You; let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; let those also who love Your name be joyful in You. For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield. Psalms 5:11-12 Everything we receive in the Christian life we receive by faith. Faith is the hand that reaches out to accept what the grace of God gives. One of those gifts from God is joy. In a single verse here Psalm 5:11 the psalmist used three different ways to describe the joy of the Lord. "Rejoice" means to show gladness. To "shout for joy" means to cry out in triumph. To "be joyful" means to experience and express the deep emotions of joy. Doesn't everyone want a life typified by a joy so rich it takes a dictionary to describe it? All of us can have that joy if we believe God. The psalmist said those who trust in the Lord are blessed recipients of an almost indescribable joy. The Hebrew word for trust i

SOUL, LISTEN UP!

Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. Psalms 103:1-5 In the psalm above, David is blessing the Lord's name with all his heart and soul. David knows the Lord is worthy of all of his worship. David is reminding himself not to forget how the Lord has ministered to him in the past. David knows that God forgives, heals, redeems, and crowns us in His glory. David was not a perfect man, but he had a heart that loved God. Sometimes you might feel as though you are not worthy of God's love. When your past sins come to mind, when your body aches, when the doctor's report is negative, or when all signs point to bad news, you might find i
